"When you get a box of chocolates, you do know what you are getting. You’re getting chocolates."
Recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community to share movie quotes they find overrated and quotes that are underrated. Now, these lines might not be considered "classic" or even the best of all time, but people sure had opinions! So here are the movie lines people are sick of hearing, and the lines we should be quoting more:
1. Overrated: "I'm the king of the world!" —Jack Dawson
Paramount Pictures / Via giphy.com
Movie: Titanic (1997)
—Kat
This quote wasn't even in the original script of Titanic! After filming the scene multiple times, trying different lines with no success, director James Cameron suggested this line to Leonardo DiCaprio. When Cameron took home the Academy Award for Best Director that year, he shouted the line to close out his acceptance speech.
2. Underrated: "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli." —Peter Clemenza
Paramount Pictures
Movie: The Godfather (1972)
The line is one of the most famous from The Godfather but was written as just "Leave the gun" in the script. Richard Castellano, who played Clemenza, improvised "Take the cannoli" after his onscreen and real-life wife, Ardell Sheridan, suggested he bring home dessert in an earlier scene.
3. Overrated: "Do. Or do not. There is no try." —Yoda
Disney / Via giphy.com
Movie: Star Wars: Episode V —The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
"I get that this quote is inspirational to a lot of people, but it feels to me like it was written by someone who has never ACTUALLY faced unfair, and virtually insurmountable, odds due to life circumstances or illness/disability."
4. Underrated: "Come the fuck on, Bridget!" —Tom
Universal Pictures
Movie: Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Mr. Darcy is very dreamy, but he could NEVER deliver lines like Tom, who once told Bridget a "well-timed blowjob's probably the best answer" in regards to her love life.
5. Overrated: "Always." —Severus Snape
Warner Bros. Pictures / Via giphy.com
Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
"Snape was a horrible person who held on to a 20-year grudge and took his frustrations out on a literal child. Snape was not in love with Lily. He was obsessed with her."
6. Underrated: "I bet you think strippers like you too." —Dwayne the bartender
Universal Pictures
8. Underrated: "Now, bring me that horizon." —Jack Sparrow
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
"It sets Jack off on an all-new voyage as he sails toward what the future has in store."
11. Overrated: “She doesn’t even go here.” —Damian Leigh
Paramount Pictures / Via giphy.com
Movie: Mean Girls (2004)
Mean Girls quotes were impossible to escape for those of us who grew up in the '00s. I suggest swapping out overplayed lines like, "Stop trying to make fetch happen!" and "You can’t sit with us!" for more underrated lines like, "Hell, no. I did not leave the South Side for this!" or "Danny DeVito, I love your work!"
12. Underrated: “The closer we are to danger, the further we are from harm.” —Pippin
New Line Cinema
Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Pippin is full of wisdom, despite Gandalf once calling him a "fool of a took."
14. Underrated: “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” —Lorenzo
Savoy Pictures
Movie: A Bronx Tale (1993)
Robert De Niro plays an MTA bus driver named Lorenzo who has a much nicer way of saying "Don't be lazy" than most people.
16. Underrated: "I know what it's like to want to die. How it hurts to smile. How you try to fit in but you can't. How you hurt yourself on the outside to try to kill the thing on the inside." —Susanna
Columbia Pictures / Via youtube.com
Movie: Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Susanna's speech, and Nurse Valerie's subsequent advice to "not drop anchor" at the psychiatric facility, serve as good reminders that figuring out who you are is possible with hard work and time.
17. Overrated: "I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." —Anna Scott
Universal Pictures / Via giphy.com
Movie: Notting Hill (1999)
While Julia Roberts delivered one of the sweetest speeches in romantic comedy history, I have to agree that this particular line has been referenced so many times over the last 22 years, it's beginning to lose the original charm.
19. Overrated: “My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get." —Forrest Gump
Paramount Pictures / Via giphy.com
Movie: Forrest Gump (1994)
"I never got the 'box of chocolates' quote. I mean, when you get a box of chocolates, you do know what you are getting. You’re getting chocolates."
20. Underrated: "I just try to live every day as if I’ve deliberately come back to this one day, to enjoy it, as if it was the full final day of my extraordinary, ordinary life." —Tim
Universal Pictures
Movie: About Time (2013)
It's pretty rare that a movie delivers a quote that will change the way you approach day-to-day life, but About Time did just that with this final monologue.
21. Overrated: "The first rule of Fight Club is, you don't talk about Fight Club." —Tyler Durden
20th Century Fox / Via giphy.com
Movie: Fight Club (1999)
People sure bring up Fight Club a lot despite all the rules regarding not mentioning Fight Club.
22. Underrated: "I am a very stylish girl." —2E Failenson
Paramount Pictures
Movie: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
—hof
2E is an older, married woman who pays for Paul's lavish lifestyle before quickly getting kicked to the curb when he falls for the fashionable Holly Golightly. 2E also proves to be a master manipulator in this scene as she offers to bankroll a vacation for the couple in order to keep Paul on her payroll.
23. Overrated: "Chip, I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey!" —Texas Ranger
Sony Pictures Releasing / Via giphy.com
Movie: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
"Any line said by those kids in the Talladega Nights movie. I find them so painfully obnoxious."
24. And finally, underrated: "Why you gotta go and do that? I'm trying to make a point." —Fenster
Gramercy Pictures
Movie: The Usual Suspects (1995)
"I use this line all the time, and almost no one gets the reference. A laugh, maybe, but no recognition."
