Extraction 2 Movie Review: Extraction became a highly anticipated movie at the time of its release. It was due to many reasons- Randeep Hooda and Pankaj Tripathi were to star in the film much to Indian viewers’ delight, the handsome Chris Hemsworth took the role of a mercenary and it was during the pandemic so content consumption was at its peak. Not surprisingly, it became the most-viewed original Netflix film, although it gained some mixed reviews.
Is the successor as good as the last one? Read our Extraction 2 Movie Review below to find out:
After a three-year-long pause, Extraction 2 is now available on Netflix. The movie picks up where the first film left off, diving deeper into the complex life of Tyler Rake, where Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Tyler and undoubtedly gives a stunning performance.
Tyler, a fearless mercenary with a strained and complicated past, finds himself entangled in a trap of peril and deception.
Sequels have pressure to be as good as the preceding film. It raises the expectations of the viewers more than what is normal and this is why most sequels end up disappointing the audiences. Extraction was left at a perfect point where people wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows and asked for another sequel, thus closing the chapter of the film.
However, the movie starts as Tyler is saved from being drowned- after he was shot and thrown in water- and carried off to Dubai. This time, he is pulled into the realm of international espionage when tasked with a seemingly inconceivable mission. Since they have added an emotional side to the plot, by showing that his ex wife’s sister and her kids are being kept as hostages and have to be extracted, Tyler accepts the mission.
One of the special features of Extraction 2 is its amazing action sequences. The film doesn’t hold back when it comes to giving the spectators thrills with its action. From fascinating car chases through the narrow streets of a bustling neighbourhood to fierce gunfights in dimly lit warehouses, every sequence is meticulously choreographed and executed with accuracy. The filmmakers have moved the boundaries of what is imaginable, delivering pulse-pounding instants that will leave you breathless.
As this marks the second direction of Sam Hargrave after he gave his directorial debut in Extraction, the new action sequence in Extraction 2 is a jaw-dropping single-take set piece compared to the famous one-shot sequence from its predecessor. The continuous shot captivates the viewer in the heart of the action. Nevertheless, the entire movie cannot be based solely on its action.
The sequel falls short of delivering an intriguing storyline and that is something that may disappoint the viewers. The story is painfully predictable and straightforward that eventually lessens the charm of the movie, especially one that is based on its action and intensity. The story of Extraction 2 intertwines elements of tension, retribution, espionage, and redemption. With such intriguing themes, the filmmakers could deliver a better and more exciting plot.
Another point worth noting is that the action-packed film does not abandon its characters and their development.
The film delves deeper into Tyler Rake’s emotional journey, showing sequences where it is demonstrated how Tyler’s lifestyle has taken a toll on his overall psyche. As he fights and struggles with his internal demons, he is left with no choice but to support and fight for those who are counting on him. Chris Hemsworth’s phenomenal performance fetches a vulnerability to the character and the protagonist is not exhibited as a single-dimensional hero rather his layers are peeled off as the movie moves. While the first movie was entirely standing on Hemsworth’s breathtaking performance, this time Golshifteh Farahani snatches some attention from Hemsworth and delivers a stunning performance.
The film’s conclusion sets the stage for another instalment showing that Tyler Rake’s journey is nowhere near its end. Several questions are left unanswered and things are kept under cover to keep the audience’s interest intact.
Conclusion-
Extraction 2 is a phenomenal action film that surely overtakes its predecessor in its action and intensity. However, it leaves the spectators confused since it was a mixture of breathtaking action sequences backed with a plot that was somewhat gripping but not at all surprising and Chris Hemsworth’s praiseworthy acting.
The third instalment has been approved by Netflix where Hemsworth will reprise his role but the third movie may not be able to entertain the audience solely based on its cast and action- so the filmmakers need to add a plot that fascinates the viewers and owns up to its name. If this does not happen, Extraction 3 may end up becoming a big misfire.
